Women at the Well is a musical meditation, a concert, and an experience: A collection of songs written from the points of view of various women in the life of Christ. This is a live program, and has been presented as both a concert (with brief commentary) as well as a retreat.
Who were the women who followed Christ? In Women at the Well, there are the women you expect to hear from, as well as those we don't think of quite as often. Mary sings her baby to sleep and wants to hold on to the magic of His boyhood. The woman whose desperation led her to touch Christ's cloak and received healing shares her longstanding grief, and the discovery the love of God. And the unnamed woman (for who else would have done it?) who baked the bread for the Last Supper feels the inclusion of Christ's love. We hear from the woman at the well in a blues song (after 5 husband, she had a right to sing the blues!) as well as the power of presence from the women waiting at the cross. These and others tell their story through song.
We are used to looking at life through 21st century eyes and it can be extremely difficult to even begin to imagine the full context of the first century. When one considers the status of women (or total lack of status), we are given another powerful example of inclusiveness of Christ. He taught women and included them among His followers. Indeed, they provided for Him and His apostles (Luke 8: 1 - 3).
The music presented is the original work of Brenda DeKeyzer Lowry and Joshua "Bubba" Murrell, B and B on the Rock. We hope that the music, song, and commentary will honor the women in Jesus's life, as well as underscore the fact that He called women to discipleship and ministry as well as men. This program has been extremely well received, and our hope is that we can provide prayerful avenues of thought and contemplation for all who attend.
The program has been described as powerful, moving, thought-provoking, and theologically sound. It has appealed to audiences consisting of individuals from a variety of Christian Traditions. All benefit from the recognition and inclusion of the Feminine in Spirituality!
